Your Dog's Health
After dogs have been amputated there can be a lot of problems with your dogs health. Exercise and food amounts are huge factors in keeping your dogs health.
Exercise
When your dog gets amputated, it is very important for your dog to get exercise. Depending on what breed, size, and how old your dog is, there are certain amounts of exercise your dog should be getting each day. For example. If you have a dogs the border collie, who is 3 years old, it should be getting a lot more exercise than a 10 year old chihuahua. To figure out how much exercise your dog needs, first research how much exercise that breed of dog should be getting a day. Make sure to take into consideration, how much larger or smaller your dog is based on the average dog in that breed. If your dog is larger make sure it get more exercise than the average dog and if it's smaller, make sure it gets a little bit less exercise than the average. If your dog is between the age of 1 and 6, and it is or was an energetic dog, make sure it gets a long run or a game of fetch. For ou get dogs it is better if they get more active exercise. If your dog is older, maybe give it a long walk. Or easier exercise that couldn't cause your dog any pain. If your dog is experiencing pain while exercising, make sure the at least get some exercise without overdoing it. If you have any questions, contact us and ask your question. Diet
Another thing to keep in mind when taking care of your amputated dog and keeping it healthy is its diet. When a dog gets amputated it is very important for it to be thinner and leaner than before. This is due to the fact that is will be harder for the dog to move around and being leaner will help it move easier. This means not feeding your dog amputee as much as before, as well as not giving excessive amounts of treats. If your amputated dog is still a puppy, it should be fed more often then an adult. The day immediately following the amputation, dogs tend not to eat, and even for a day afterwards. Instead of resorting to force feeding, there are other methods that you can do.
-Adding low-sodium chicken broth
-Canned and cooked mackerel or salmon
-Remember to warm up the food a little
-Feed the most moist, stinky, and healthy foods such as: liverwurst, braunschwager, and chicken livers are all very good.
-You can also try hand-feeding your dog if it helps, but it is important not to get your dog used to it so it can get back to its normal life.
